Beck Hall to become England’s first 100% plant-based hotel

In this episode we speak to brothers Alex and Adrien Grosjean, young entrepreneurs who have recently acquired The Residence Inn by Marriott Manchester Piccadilly. We discussed the reasons why Manchester’s visitor market is booming, and their decision to invest in this area, why they see extended-stay accommodation as a major opportunity in what is one of the UK's fastest-growing cities, how they plan to enhance their portfolio of hotels, and their advice for the next generation of hospitality disruptors.

Beck Hall in Malham, Yorkshire has announced that it will become England’s first 100% plant-based hotel from 1 December 2023.

The hotel currently features 20 bedrooms and was acquired by Louise and Andy Mackbeth almost 10 years ago.

The menu at Beck Hall is already around 50% plant-based and is subtly influenced by the travels of explorer Mr Hardacre.

He established Beck Hall as a wayfarers’ hostel in the 1930s, after stumbling upon the half-derelict building whilst trekking through “wildest Yorkshire”.

Over the past six months the team has been developing some new innovative vegan dishes such as lemon and thyme ballotine of herbed seitan with crispy polenta, roasted red pepper puree and a carrot bacon crisp, and for dessert, pomegranate and rose mess with vanilla meringue, rose and cardamom cream, seasonal fruit and pistachio brittle.

Louise and Andy said: “We look forward to welcoming back loyal guests alongside those new ones, who – like us – would love to visit a fully plant-based hotel offering the most incredible food, location and team. This isn’t a profit-led decision, Beck Hall is already 98% full year round, if anything, it is a risk for our family, but it’s one we’ve thought a lot about and we are all in.”
