Radisson opens first verified net zero hotel in Manchester

In this episode we speak to Nico Tréguer, co-founder of Roberts and Treguer and The Culpeper Family. Nico spoke about founding the group alongside his longtime friend Gareth, having had a vision for bringing more nature spaces to cities, the planned extension of The Buxton in Spitalfields, and how the site’s storytelling engages guests and the local community, how the Culpeper Family’s core sustainability ethos helped it secure its B-Corp status and why hospitality has a responsibility to educate and innovate when it comes to sustainability.

Radisson Hotel Manchester City Centre has opened its doors, marking Radisson’s first hotel to open that has achieved verified net zero status.

The net zero site has achieved the 2040 requirements of the net zero methodology for hotels today, and its opening follows an “extensive” refurbishment.

Radisson Hotel Manchester City Centre is located near to the AO Arena, a leading music, events and entertainment venue, and Manchester Victoria train station, with connections across the Greater Manchester region as well as nationally.

The hotel features 252 guest rooms and suites with a “Scandinavian-inspired” design, featuring neutral tones and natural design elements. It also features a bar and restaurant and an outdoor terrace.

A spa also features a range of beauty treatments as well as a heated indoor pool, sauna, steam room and gym. Additionally, the hotel has “state-of-the-art” event facilities with capacity for up to 220 attendees.

The hotel’s net zero program is “comprehensive” and includes the carbon footprint from energy use (Scopes 1 and 2 as defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol or GHG), as well as the hotel’s operational and supply chain footprint (Scope 3).

These actions include the use of 100% renewable energy, achieved through electrification of hotels or by purchasing all renewable energy for all hotel functions from heating, cooling, hot water to cooking and spa and pool facilities.

It also means overhauling operations to minimise waste, re-evaluating supply chains with a focus on F&B, and other sources of emissions, such as hotel related transportation to minimise emissions.

Jens Brandin, general manager of Radisson Hotel Manchester City Centre, said, “To introduce the Radisson brand to this vibrant and buzzing city is a very exciting moment. What’s more, we are immensely proud to achieve Verified Net Zero status, proving our dedication to delivering the pinnacle of sustainable hotel stays.

“Radisson Hotel Manchester City Centre, A Verified Net Zero Hotel is more than just a place to stay; it’s a destination where guests can relax, rejuvenate and experience the best that Manchester has to offer with a minimal environmental impact.”

Radisson is opening a second net zero site this summer, with Radisson RED Oslo City Centre opening in July.

Inge Huijbrechts, chief sustainability and security officer at Radisson Hotel Group, said, “With the opening of our first two Verified Net Zero hotels, Radisson Hotel Group demonstrates its commitment to Net Zero 2050, and to showcasing truly sustainable hospitality.

“For the first time, we focus on reducing emissions from energy, operations and the supply chain. As we face the evolving challenge of climate change, Radisson Hotel Group is taking an essential step in reshaping the future of hospitality, one Verified Net Zero hotel at a time.”
