Oxford hotels launch ‘Essentially Oxford’ to promote indie luxury sector

The teams behind the Old Bank Hotel and The Store have launched essentially Oxford, a digital platform designed to promote independent, luxury-led businesses across the city. 

The initiative brings together hotels, restaurants, retailers and cultural organisations and presents them through an editorial format.

The platform highlights locations to stay, dine, shop and visit, with a focus on businesses that emphasise “craft, authenticity and detail”.

It also features profiles of local makers and organisations that contribute to the city’s cultural landscape.

Essentially Oxford is inviting independent businesses to join the platform. Each participant will receive a profile page featuring their history, photography and booking or social links. 

Editorial categories include food and drink, shops and makers, culture and craft, weddings and celebrations, countryside and adventure and a rotating selection of features on founders and events.

Businesses already involved include Blackwells, Blenheim Palace, Burrows and Hare, the Bodleian, Fabulous Flowers, Gees, Modern Art Oxford, Objects of Use, Oxford River Cruises and Humphreys of Henley.

The platform will be promoted at luxury trade shows, travel industry events and other hospitality settings to raise awareness among visitors and industry audiences.

Simon Drake, general manager at The Store, said: “Oxford has long been celebrated for its rich history and intellect. With Essentially Oxford, we’re shining a light on the city’s contemporary spirit – its makers, chefs, creatives, and visionaries – who embody independent luxury in their own distinctive ways.”

Rebecca Mofford,  managing director at The Old Bank, added: “As an independent business operating in the city for nearly four decades, we’ve seen many others come and go. Oxford has such a vast wealth of magnificent and hidden attractions to offer the discerning luxury traveller. We’re delighted to be a part of this project and to champion the independent enterprises and authentic experiences in our unique and awe-inspiring city.”
