The Bedford Hotel Belfast has appointed Ciaran O’Neill as managing director ahead of its opening in May following an 18-month redevelopment of a historic building.

O’Neill, who is the owner and managing director of the Bishop’s Gate Hotel in Derry, will oversee both properties for RFM Hotels.

The new Belfast hotel is situated within the 1904 Scottish Mutual Building and will feature 82 bedrooms, a restaurant, and a café bar.

General managers Mike Gatt and JP McCafferty will lead daily operations at the respective sites under O’Neill’s supervision.

The project is part of a wider revitalisation of the area behind Belfast City Hall and includes private dining and event spaces.

O’Neill previously served on the board of Tourism NI. His appointment is intended to align the service standards of the new boutique property with those of its sister hotel in Derry.

He said: “I am delighted to be taking on this role to join The Bedford Hotel at this pivotal stage as we prepare to open for bookings in May. Bringing The Bedford Hotel to life gives us great confidence in replicating Bishop’s Gate’s excellence in a new setting.

“The success of Bishop’s Gate has always been driven by our team, and that same focus will guide The Bedford Hotel. I look forward to the continued success of Bishop’s Gate and to helping create something truly special with The Bedford Hotel.”

Alison Rankin Frost, chair of RFM Hotels, added: “Ciaran brings a wealth of experience and a distinguished record of achievements. His expertise is set to contribute significantly to our pursuit of excellence, ensuring that our standards of service are of the highest calibre.”

Laura McCorry, chief executive of Tourism NI, concluded: “Ciaran O’Neill has been a cornerstone of the Northern Ireland hospitality industry for many years. We are confident that under Ciaran’s guidance, The Bedford will further strengthen our global appeal and provide visitors with the exceptional quality they expect.”
