Lake District hotel receives £7m investment

In this episode we speak to brothers Alex and Adrien Grosjean, young entrepreneurs who have recently acquired The Residence Inn by Marriott Manchester Piccadilly. We discussed the reasons why Manchester’s visitor market is booming, and their decision to invest in this area, why they see extended-stay accommodation as a major opportunity in what is one of the UK's fastest-growing cities, how they plan to enhance their portfolio of hotels, and their advice for the next generation of hospitality disruptors.

A Lake District hotel has secured a £7m investment, backed by CBRE Global Investors, that will be used to extend and develop the site, with the addition of 30 new bedrooms as well as a new spa facility.

The Swan, Newby Bridge, will also use the funds to upgrade the site’s interiors, which will be designed and led by Fiona Parks of Johnstone Park Interiors.

The hotel said it will “preserve the character and heritage” of the 17th Century coaching inn, but will use the investment to “revive it with this new development and modern touches”.

The investment will also facilitate a luxury spa development, which will feature a range of facilities, including a hydrotherapy pool, thermal rooms, relaxation areas, and treatment rooms, led by a team of expert therapists.

The spa development will also include a new café, serving champagne, cake and other refreshments. The extension and spa is set to “complement The Swan’s current facilities and establish it as the leading spa resort destination in the Lake District”.

In addition to the investment, the hotel is now looking to recruit 20 new full and part-time jobs that have been created by the development, in addition to a new apprenticeship programme it is set to launch.

James Houlston, managing director of BH Group, said: “The Swan is an established favourite in the Lakes, this investment really gives us the opportunity to build on its success so it can reach its full potential as a world-class spa resort.

“The proposed extension will really take the hotel to the next level, so that we can deliver that ultimate top class, luxury experience.”

Managing director of The Swan, Sarah Gibbs added: “We can’t wait for the renovations to get under way, we have some incredible plans and I think guests are going to be blown away when we get to reveal it all next year.

“The Lake District is already one of the most popular destinations in the UK and there’s definitely a growing market for a luxury spa resort here, and we’re more than happy to be the ones that can offer this. We have a fantastic team here and we are excited to grow it alongside these developments.”
