The number of overseas visitors searching earlier this year for UK hotel stays during August rose sharply year-on-year, according to new data from Expedia Group.
New data from Expedia Group found that the number of US travellers looking to book UK hotels in August was up 35% compared with the same time last year.
Similar browsing by Canadians was up 25%, while searches from Germany showed an increase of around 20%.
Interest from emerging markets such as South Korea, Brazil and China also continued to increase – South Korea jumped 100%, while Brazil and China increased 30% and 5% respectively.
The report said that this was good news for hoteliers because despite a rise in staycations, overseas visitors spend more per night on average than domestic travellers. American travellers spend £46 more per night on average, while Brazilian visitors spent an extra £36.
American travellers also stayed almost a day longer in their UK hotel than a domestic traveller – 2.5 days compared with 1.6 days. German travellers stayed almost three days in their UK hotel last summer and Brazilians stayed three-and-a-half days.
Meanwhile, searches for Cornwall, Bournemouth, Devon and the Scottish Highlands have all doubled on the same period last year, while London and Edinburgh are the most searched-for cities.
Isabelle Pinson, senior director of market management for the UK and Ireland at Expedia, said: “Our numbers paint a very encouraging picture for UK hotels in summer 2015 with emerging traveller markets combining with more established ones to give solid, year-on-year growth in interest.”
