London is the most popular destination in the UK over the New Year period, according to new figures released today.

Hotel search website Trivago, which analysed searches made during the past 3 months for travel over the period of 26th December to 4th January, found that London was the top destination nationally followed by Edinburgh, Manchester and Birmingham.

Amsterdam was found to be the most popular destination internationally, followed by Dublin and Paris.

Hotel prices have increased in each of Trivago’s most popular destinations – with the worst offender being Edinburgh, hiking prices up by 332% to an average of £458 on 31st December.

London came in second place in terms of cost with an average price of £302, an 80% increase, while York followed at £203 (86%). Despite this, UK users were only found to be willing to pay an average of £154 per night for their New Year’s break.

Denise Bartlett, Trivago’s UK press officer, said: “Although it is normal for hoteliers to increase their prices for the popular New Year period, these price hikes seem be growing on a yearly basis.

“Last year, our data showed that hotel prices in Edinburgh were up [by] 146% – this year, this figure has increased to 332%.” She added that it would be it would be interesting to know how many people were deterred by the high prices.

Meanwhile, four-star hotels were the most popular New Year’s choice among UK travellers, accounting for 40% of all searched, followed by three-star (28%) and then five-star hotels (12%).

UK users will stay at their chosen destination for an average duration of 5 nights.
