British hotelier wins £110,000 on Trump bets

In this episode we speak to brothers Alex and Adrien Grosjean, young entrepreneurs who have recently acquired The Residence Inn by Marriott Manchester Piccadilly. We discussed the reasons why Manchester’s visitor market is booming, and their decision to invest in this area, why they see extended-stay accommodation as a major opportunity in what is one of the UK's fastest-growing cities, how they plan to enhance their portfolio of hotels, and their advice for the next generation of hospitality disruptors.

A British hotelier has won more than £100,000 after he placed £5,000 worth of bets on Donald Trump to become the next President of the United States.

John Mappin – who owns the Camelot Castle hotel in Tintagel, Cornwall – started by placing a small bet last year, at odds of 20/1, that Trump would win the Republican Party nomination.

He then placed further bets at 33/1 that Trump would win the presidency, and in total placed a total of around £5,000 on 30 bets between June 2015 up until the election day on Tuesday 8 November.

Following the announcement of the results, Mappin’s total payout was confirmed as £110,000.

Speaking to The Mirror, Mappin said: “My total stake was around £5,000 and in the end I got a return of £110,000 – which is better than a slap in the face with a Cornish mackerel.

“I have a way of analysing information. It’s a private method I have used to analyse America. I knew he was going to win so I thought I’d stick a bet on. Everyone has been slagging him [Trump] off in the UK, apart from me. I said ‘no, he is good news for everyone’.”

Mappin is believed to be a “long-term admirer” of Trump and is said to have even made him an honorary ‘knight of the round table’ at his hotel.
