Held at The Sage Gateshead, the North East England Tourism Awards honoured the achievements of venues, attractions, hotels and service providers across 14 categories. The Sandman Signature, the first UK hotel to be opened by Canadian hospitality chain the Sandman Hotel Group, was praised by judges for “its contribution to the visitor economy, the sense of home away from home, which guests feel, care access, environmental awareness and national and international presence within the market during the 2012 Olympics.”
Opened on the site of the former Scottish and Newcastle Brewery more than a year ago, the four-star, 170-bedroom hotel will now compete against winners from other UK regions in the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence in 2013.
General manager Paul Smith said: “We are delighted to win this award, which recognises the part we have played in attracting leisure and corporate visitors to the region. The award acknowledges the hard work, commitment and pride which the staff and management have channeled into the hotel since the opening of the property.
“When we decided to expand our operation into the UK, Newcastle immediately struck us as an excellent location thanks to its great infrastructure and its place as the commercial and historical heart of the north of England.
“Our company has exciting plans for continued expansion within the UK which is refreshing in the current economic climate.
“We are now looking forward to representing the region nationally and showing the rest of the country what it has to offer.”
