Marriott International suspends hotel openings and investment in Russia

Marriott has earmarked $1m (£761,250) to its associate relief fund to support its associates who are being impacted by the war in Ukraine

Marriott International has announced that it is closing its corporate office in Moscow and pausing the opening of upcoming hotels as well as all future hotel development and investment in Russia.

In a recent statement, the group said it is housing Ukrainian refugees at Marriott properties in neighbouring countries, and Marriott has earmarked $1m (£761,250) to its associate relief fund to support its associates who are being impacted by the war in Ukraine.

Marriott added that it is working to comply with sanctions and applicable laws, and its hotels in Russia are owned by third parties, therefore it “continues to evaluate” the ability for these hotels to remain open.

Additionally, the group has been “closely monitoring” the situation in Ukraine, Russia and neighbouring countries, and remains in “regular contact” with its teams on the ground.

Marriott International said: “We are deeply saddened by the horrific violence impacting the people of Ukraine.

“We deplore the loss of life, widespread impacts to millions of innocent civilians and the humanitarian disaster in Ukraine. We strongly support those working towards peace and an end to the needless suffering.”
