The Nare Hotel unveils new staff accommodation

In this episode we speak to Nico Tréguer, co-founder of Roberts and Treguer and The Culpeper Family. Nico spoke about founding the group alongside his longtime friend Gareth, having had a vision for bringing more nature spaces to cities, the planned extension of The Buxton in Spitalfields, and how the site’s storytelling engages guests and the local community, how the Culpeper Family’s core sustainability ethos helped it secure its B-Corp status and why hospitality has a responsibility to educate and innovate when it comes to sustainability.

Roseland Peninsula seaside hotel, The Nare, has unveiled its brand-new staff accommodation, Jago House, which aims to bring “a new standard” to live-in facilities in Cornwall while tackling the housing crisis and associated labour shortages in the sector.

The opening reportedly follows substantial investment by The Nare, which first set out on the journey to enhance staff accommodation, both in terms of quality and quantity, over a decade ago.

The property is said to have been transformed by local contractors from former industrial units. When fully occupied, it will accommodate approximately 20 people in private double and single en-suite apartments.

It is reported that Jago House welcomed its first residents as the hospitality industry in Cornwall faces an escalating labour shortage, which has been attributed to a loss of EU nationals and lack of housing for those wanting to move to the county for work.

At the same time, demand for staff accommodation is reportedly at an all-time high; online searches for “jobs with accommodation UK” have risen by over 50% in the last 12 months and in the same period, interest in relocation is up 180%.

The hotel states that the new accommodation is “just one element of the five-star hotel’s reinvigorated staff recruitment and wellbeing programme”, the opening of Jago House coincides with the launch of The Nare’s specialist careers website.

As well as showcasing current vacancies, which include front of house roles, chefs and housekeeping, the website highlights The Nare’s career progression opportunities and draws on the hotel’s passion for “traditional comfort and personal service”, qualities which give team members the opportunity to develop skills not widely practised in hospitality sector counterparts.

Toby Ashworth, proprietor of The Nare, said: “Comfort is at the heart of The Nare. We are renowned for providing a standard of luxury unrivalled in the South West so naturally, wanted to extend this into our staff accommodation provision.

“We have a team of over 95 with some colleagues being with us for over 65 years. Treating our team with the same care that we offer our guests and creating a sense of family is vitally important to us and so providing an enhanced quality of staff accommodation has been a long-term vision of mine.”

He added: “Over the last 12 months, the need for staff accommodation has transformed from being an added extra to a necessity due to shortages in the housing market. The resulting effect on staff availability has been felt across the hospitality industry, The Nare included.

“As we prepare for what looks to be another busy year, Jago House has opened at the most opportune time. By utilising an empty industrial unit through Section 106 we are additionally ensuring we don’t take away from housing stock. We look forward to welcoming new team members to The Nare family and enjoying the benefit of living just minutes from the hotel.”
