Afan Lodge appoints new general manager

In this episode we speak to Daniel Kyriakides, a partner at law firm Reed Smith. We discuss why private members’ clubs are experiencing a resurgence and what that means for the future of the hotel sector. From heritage buildings being reimagined as lifestyle destinations to hotels borrowing the experiential playbook of members’ clubs, we discuss how the lines between the two are becoming increasingly blurred, and why global growth is on the horizon for the private members club model.

Afan Lodge in the Afan Valley, South Wales, a hotel popular with cyclists and walkers, has announced the appointment of Simon Bevan as its new general manager.

Having worked and travelled internationally within the hospitality industry, Bevan is now bringing his decades of experience in hospitality home to the Afan Valley.

His qualifications in hotel management led him to start his career as the trainee manager of a nightclub in Derby. Bevan then went on to become an openings manager, a role which would see him launch new-build and refurbished venues.

After that he went on to manage hotels in France, Jamaica, and hospitality venues in Lithuania and Houston, Texas.

Upon returning back to the UK, he managed leisure facilities, including Gala Bingo and Bowlplex complexes.

Bevan said: “I feel as though I’ve truly come full circle. I’m very happy to be a part of the Welsh community once again and especially pleased to be leading the growth of Afan Lodge as a hotel, bar and restaurant.

“I’m excited to help it grow and to further embed it within our community.”

Afan Lodge is owned and managed by the Pen-Y-Cymoedd Community Interest Company (PyC CIC), which aims to safeguard its future as a community asset.

Paula Marsh, board of directors of PyC CIC, said: “PyC CIC continually works to ensure that Afan Lodge continues to develop as a prime tourism destination, that it adds economic value, and continues to be an important employer within the Afan Valley.

Simon’s appointment is the next step in this strategic aim for the hotel, and we are delighted to welcome him.”
