Marriott UK has joined the Room to Reward charity scheme to provide free hotel breaks for voluntary workers.

The partnership involves 20 properties pledging to donate one short break annually from their unsold room inventory.

The participating properties include Sheraton Grand Edinburgh, JW Marriott Grosvenor House, Sheraton Grand London Park Lane and Marriott Hotel London Grosvenor Square.

The initiative follows a pilot period where several Marriott UK hotels trialled the scheme. The expanded partnership aims to increase the number of locations available to registered volunteers.

Room to Reward marked its 10th anniversary last year. Since its launch, more than 950 hotels and 1,200 voluntary organisations have joined the programme.

More than 4,000 volunteers have received hotel stays through the scheme, including nearly 1,000 individuals in 2025.

Joanna Chugh, Europe chief operating officer at Marriott International, said: “We are proud to be joining Room to Reward supporting the incredible volunteers who give so much to their communities. By donating unsold rooms, our hotels can make a meaningful difference, and we are delighted that our properties across the UK can play a part in recognising and rewarding these inspiring individuals.”

Adam Terpening, Room to Reward trustee, added: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Marriott UK to Room to Reward. To have such a prestigious group joining our journey is just amazing and means the nominated volunteers will have even more incredible properties to choose from. We are hugely grateful to Marriott for their wonderful support and seeing the value in putting an unsold room to good use.”

Marriott UK’s pledge to Room to Reward reflects ongoing support for volunteer recognition

News Analysis

In July 2016, Room to Reward reported its initial success, having donated over 100 room nights valued at approximately £15,000 in its first year, establishing a model for hotels to utilise unsold rooms for charitable purposes. This early commitment to rewarding volunteers laid the groundwork for a now expansive initiative, which has grown to involve more than 950 hotels as of September 2025 donating breaks to deserving individuals.

Since the charity’s establishment in 2015, various hotel groups have progressively joined the effort, including LGH Hotels in August 2022, which emphasised the potential for hotel chains to recognise ‘hidden heroes’ through complimentary stays. This ongoing trend illustrates a sector-wide shift towards valuing volunteer contributions, which Marriott UK’s recent pledge to participate further highlights following in the footsteps of its counterparts.

The recognition of volunteers within the hotel industry has now culminated in Marriott UK’s expanded partnership with Room to Reward, which aims to offer a larger number of participating hotels and increased opportunities for volunteers to experience complimentary stays. This strategic move not only furthers Marriott’s commitment to social responsibility but also aligns with the charity’s mission to celebrate those who contribute selflessly to their communities on their 10-year anniversary.
