In this episode we speak to brothers Alex and Adrien Grosjean, young entrepreneurs who have recently acquired The Residence Inn by Marriott Manchester Piccadilly. We discussed the reasons why Manchester’s visitor market is booming, and their decision to invest in this area, why they see extended-stay accommodation as a major opportunity in what is one of the UK's fastest-growing cities, how they plan to enhance their portfolio of hotels, and their advice for the next generation of hospitality disruptors.

Marriott International has announced it will open the largest Aloft by Marriott-branded hotel in Manchester city centre next week (16 June), which will mark the brand’s first property in the city.

The hotel, which will feature 358 rooms in a prominent position on Deansgate, was developed by luxury property developer Dean Street Developments. The site includes panoramic views across the city skyline.

Upon opening, Aloft by Marriott Manchester will be affiliated with the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty scheme, allowing guests to use digital keys and mobile check-in via an app.

Facilities at the site will also include a 24-hour fitness centre, a private meeting space, and a grab-and-go food station, as well as a cocktail bar that hosts live music performance events, alongside dedicated amenity programmes for families and pets.

Adi Hodzic, managing director of Dean Street Developments, said: “This opening is a defining moment for Dean Street Developments, for Aloft by Marriott, and for Manchester’s hospitality landscape. We set out to create a landmark, and we believe we have.”

Sandra Schulze-Potgieter, Marriott International VP of brand management for EMEA, added: “We are delighted to introduce Aloft by Marriott to Manchester, bringing this upscale, lifestyle brand to one of the UK’s most dynamic cities. Aloft is different by design.

“It is a hub, or launching and landing pad for all that travel has in store, bringing our unique attitude and atmosphere to each and every stay, now also in Manchester – a city internationally recognised for its creativity, individuality and innovation.”

Aloft’s expansion in Manchester links to larger brand trends

News Analysis

Aloft by Marriott’s upcoming opening marks a significant addition to Manchester’s hotel landscape, especially given the brand’s recent momentum in the UK. In March 2021, Aloft launched its first property in Birmingham, featuring 195 modern rooms and amenities designed to attract a younger, tech-savvy clientele in Birmingham’s Eastside district. This aligns with a broader strategy to bolster the brand’s presence in city centres, showcasing a shift in hotel development towards urban locations appealing to contemporary travellers.

The Manchester opening also represents a continuation of Marriott’s efforts to grow its presence in key UK cities. For instance, in February 2016, Marriott announced it was on track to open its fourth Aloft-branded hotel in the UK, further establishing the brand as a viable option in urban hotel offerings as part of their expansion strategy. This illustrates a consistent growth pattern for the Aloft brand across the UK, responding to increasing demand for lifestyle-oriented accommodations.

Furthermore, Manchester has become a focal point for various hotel brands looking to capitalise on its rising tourist and business traveller appeal. For example, Hilton recently announced plans for two new hotels set to open in prime locations within the city reflecting similar growth trends. This competitive landscape highlights the urgency for brands like Aloft to differentiate themselves with unique offerings, such as their focus on live music and vibrant social spaces, to capture market share in a bustling urban centre.
