The Belfry aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030

The Belfry Hotel and Resort has revealed that it intends to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030 after saving 3 million kWh in electricity and gas usage between 2019 and 2022.

The Warwickshire-based company claimed that the energy savings were the result of several measures implemented by the resort.

In 2022, it installed 187 Genius Hubs in bedrooms which helped reduce heat energy usage by 64%.

These devices can reduce a property’s energy consumption by only heating the parts of the building that are being used, and provide guests with control over their room climate.

The Genius Hubs are only one of The Belfry’s ongoing sustainability projects.

The company also plans to include other measures such as a water management system that filters waste water and will redirect it to the resort’s reservoirs, lakes, or will be sprayed directly onto the golf courses.

Turf nurseries will be built to grow up to 1000 square feet of new turf using locally grown produce.

Waterless urinals will also be installed, along with six new electric vehicle charging stations and an additional 40 or more planned.

In addition, the company plans to introduce electric vehicles on-site, such as electric golf buggies, convert 80% of the resort’s lighting to LED, with many areas now lit by motion sensor lights, prioritise wildlife enrichment areas, and use biodegradable materials for marketing or promotional products and banners.

To ensure that the resort’s sustainability initiatives remain front-of-mind, The Belfry has also nominated a team of in-house ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) Champions.

The ESG Champions include employees from all departments who meet monthly to review, agree and communicate projects and initiatives that can help reduce the impact the business has on the planet.
Chris Evans, maintenance and energy co-ordinator, and a member of the ESG Champion group at The Belfry, said: “We’re incredibly proud of the amount of energy that the resort saved last year and to be part of a team that is setting a standard for other businesses to follow. We all know how important it is to make significant changes to ensure we minimise our impact on the environment and it’s really motivating to see the difference we’re making when the figures are calculated.”
