Montcalm Marble Arch has now rebranded to Montcalm Mayfair and is set to reopen its doors in Spring 2025 after having closed in March 2023 for a full renovation.
The new Montcalm Mayfair is a five-star hotel that sits at the top of Park Lane, steps from Hyde Park and the West End. The full restoration includes a wellness space, community-welcoming public spaces and a new restaurant.
The 1700s building has been preserved by architects Holland Harvey and interior designers Studio Mica, who have alchemised the guest bedrooms and suites, with Studio Est bringing “timeless” design and craftsmanship to the public areas including the restaurant, bar and the Grand Ballroom.
The original Georgian façade on Great Cumberland Place has been restored and enhanced since its original construction. Damaged in WWII, and rebuilt in the 1970s, its façade has been brought back to life with new personality.
Holland Harvey has restored the Georgian building, preserving the historical integrity while reimagining and expanding the property with floor-to-ceiling glazing, which maximises natural daylight into the guest rooms while maintaining privacy. On the Quebec Mews side of this Grade II-listed building, the extension emulates a traditional mansard roof in keeping with the neighbourhood’s centuries-old architecture.
Interiors blend the “historical charm” of Georgian architecture with contemporary, handcrafted furnishings and artistic details. The public areas will be “sophisticated yet welcoming”, with the warmth of a living room and with residential-feel furniture.
Natural, earthy tones come through in organic materials, including oak, marble and brass, brought to life with pieces designed and produced by social-impact businesses, such as felled-wood furniture from Goldfinger and embroidered linen accessories made by refugee artists through SEP Jordan.
Nadira Lalji, director Precis Advisory Limited, said: “We’re most excited by the reopening of Montcalm Mayfair, as this characterful independent spirit heralds a new flagship for our small collection of hotels. A thoughtful top-to-toe renovation that shows fresh imagination thanks to our creative team excited to share their love of stories, characters and history from its neighbourhood.”
The new hotel will have 150 guest rooms, including three signature suites. The botanical suite enjoys its own entrance on Berkeley street, ensuring privacy.
Guest rooms feature personalised welcome amenities inspired by five characters representing the diverse cultural history of the building and neighbourhood — Elizabeth Montagu, George Bridgetower, Dame Nellie Melba, the Marquis of Montcalm, and Constance Spry — including letters written by creative students at London’s Goldsmiths College, and portraits by artists chosen from six UK art schools, who were invited to answer an open call.
The hotel’s dining venues include a restaurant and all-sensory afternoon teas. The hotel bar is a focal point at the heart of the hotel, with an illuminated curved, fluted glass gantry and three marble arches which are a nod to London’s Marble Arch landmark nearby.
In addition, the hotel has a subterranean space with a plunge pool, wellness facilities, a fully-equipped fitness suite, four treatment rooms, including two suites for couples treatments.
Montcalm Mayfair will be available to host occasions of all sizes, including at the Library, a private dining room suited to corporate lunches, cocktail soirées and private supper celebrations. There will also be a 400 sqm pillarless Grand Ballroom featuring bespoke wood panelling, clean lines and handcrafted elements which can accommodate up to 320 dinner guests.
Samantha van Exter, Montcalm Collection, said: “In a significant milestone for the Montcalm Collection, our iconic, historic address at Montcalm Marble Arch will be reborn, fusing classic Georgian architecture with an artful, modern spirit. We are looking forward to offering our guests the true Montcalm Experience at our new jewel in the Montcalm Collection this Autumn.”
