AirBnB is adding extra features on its platform to face the increased demand guests have for experiences, in a move that is set to challenge the hotel sector.
The group said it believes that people often choose hotels because of the services they offer, like room service, access to a gym, or an appointment at the spa – and is now pledging to offer the same to its guests.
Launching with 10 categories in 260 cities, users will now have the chance to book new services including private chefs, massages, spa treatments, personal training, hair and makeup sessions, manicures, photography shoots and full-service catering.
Brian Chesky, Airbnb co-founder and CEO, said: “Seventeen years ago, we changed the way people travel. More than two billion guests later, Airbnb is synonymous with a place to stay. With the launch of services and experiences, we’re changing travel again. Now you can Airbnb more than an Airbnb.”
“People choose hotels for their services. People choose Airbnbs for the space. Now, we’re giving you the best of both worlds – amazing homes with services that make them even more special.”
The platform is also adding the possibility of booking local experiences in 650 cities around the world, such as food tours, landmark and museum experiences, art workshops and wildlife and outdoors events.
In addition, AirBnB is adding its own “originals” – specifically designed experiences only available on the platform, such as cooking classes and behind-the-scenes tours.
Chesky said: “Today’s travel activities offer no real connection to the city you’re visiting. The most authentic way to explore a city is with the locals who know it best. With Airbnb Experiences, don’t just see a place – experience it.”
