Marriott International has officially entered the Mauritanian market with the opening of the Sheraton Nouakchott.
The 200-room hotel is the first internationally operated brand to establish a presence in the Northwest African nation.
Located in the capital city of Nouakchott, the property is situated near the Marché Capitale and the National Museum of Mauritania. The hotel features two restaurants, a fitness centre with separate floors for men and women, and an outdoor pool.
The design of the building incorporates regional heritage and traditional crafts, including wood carving and metalwork. Architects drew inspiration from the Richat Structure and the stone architecture of Tichitt for the communal and meeting spaces.
Facilities include two presidential suites and the Sheraton Club for Marriott Bonvoy members. The hotel also contains 2,600 square metres of event space, comprising two ballrooms and four meeting rooms.
Sandra Schulze-Potgieter, VP for premium, select and midscale brands EMEA at Marriott, said: “We are proud to have brought Marriott International to Mauritania with the opening of Sheraton Nouakchott, the first internationally operated and branded hotel in the country.
“Since welcoming our first guests, the hotel has quickly established itself as a destination for both travellers and the local community. This milestone underscores our commitment to delivering exceptional hospitality experiences in emerging markets, while celebrating the culture and character of each destination.”
