Holiday Inn Express Middlesbrough has announced it is to receive a £2.2m extension due to “unprecedented” demand for room since it opened last August.
The extension will see an additional 21 bedrooms created meaning the hotel, which is managed by Redefine BDL Hotels, will soon have a total of 159 bedrooms.
The plans – funded by a consortium of private investors, Sherland Property, in partnership with Middlesbrough Council – will also see a separate retail and restaurant area constructed, which will be run by an independent operator.
The hotel is located in the Cook and Endeavour House building on Albert Road, which had lain vacant for 15 years until the initial £12.4m development of the hotel in 2014.
Mark Ashall, director of Ashall Projects, which is carrying out the project, said: “Thanks to the soaring demand for rooms at Holiday Inn Express Middlesbrough, we are delighted to be extending the facilities to ensure more people can come and enjoy what Middlesbrough has to offer in comfortable surroundings.”
Mark Winter, the hotel’s general manager, added: “Since opening last year, the hotel has proved even more popular than we anticipated. I’m thrilled that the extension has been given the green light and look forward to welcoming even more guests to the hotel to experience the team’s fantastic service.
“We’ll also be looking for more people to join our team when the new bedrooms become available, which is great news for the local area.”
The expansion of the hotel is expected to be complete in January 2017.
