Historic Sussex Hotels has acquired the Black Horse in Climping from the Ei Group, adding its fourth property to its portfolio.

A family run firm, Historic Sussex Hotels’ existing sites include Bailiffscourt, Ockenden Manor and The Spread Eagle Hotel. Originally a pub operating for 180-years the company said they plan to refurbish the property into a hotel opening in Spring 2020.

With an “interest and passion for historic and architecturally interesting buildings”, a spokesperson for the company, said: “We are excited to add The Black Horse in Climping to our portfolio and look forward to beautifully restoring the pub to its former glory. Each of our hotels and spas are unique in style, character and history and united in a commitment to offering a relaxing, friendly and welcoming atmosphere.”

Nick Earee from Fleurets, who brokered the transaction on behalf of Ei Group, said: “We are thrilled to have completed on the quick sale of this Grade II listed 17th century property and to the perfect purchaser; we began marketing the premises in late November last year off a guide price of £500,000 for the freehold.”

Richard Phillips of Ei Group added: “We are pleased to have sold this site to excellent operators in Historic Hotels, who have an outstanding reputation. It is also pleasing to see that the building, which has been operated as a pub for nearly 180 years, will continue to be used and enjoyed by locals and guests alike.”
