Bloc Hotels has unveiled plans for a multi-million development, which it says will “transform” the Birmingham skyline.
The 25-storey Bloc Grand Central, which will be designed by architects Glenn Howells and entirely funded by private investors, will be a high-tech hotel located close to New Street Station.
It is hoped the development will help realise Birmingham City Council’s vision of making the southside district of the city a “vibrant and attractive” destination.
The group’s flagship 238-bedroom hotel will be built on a site currently occupied by a largely vacant 1960’s office block, and will create 40 full-time jobs in the area.
Rob Morgan, managing director, said: “Bloc Grand Central will be a defining moment in the company’s ambitious growth strategy. Our first hotel was in Birmingham and we want to continue to invest in the city where the brand was born.”
Glenn Howells, of Glenn Howells Architects, added: “The building is situated at an important gateway site within Birmingham City Centre and offers the opportunity to define a benchmark for the future regeneration of this part of the city.”
The hotel will join the company’s existing properties in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter and London’s Gatwick Airport.
