Helping hospitality navigate new government EV charging regulations

As the UK government enforces new public electric vehicle (EV) charging regulations introduced in recent months, RAW Charging, a leading provider of charging solutions specifically for the hospitality and leisure sectors, is offering advice to hoteliers on how to stay compliant and enhance their guest offering.

The legislation, which applies to public charge points over 8kW installed after 24th November 2024 (and all existing public chargepoints above 50kW) introduces new requirements designed to improve the EV charging experience. And hoteliers now face fines of up to £10,000 for non-compliance.

What the new regulations mean for hoteliers

The new rules mandate that public EV chargers must:

  • Operate with at least 99% uptime, ensuring reliability
  • Accept contactless credit and debit card payments on chargers above 8kW
  • Provide transparent pricing displayed at the charger
  • Offer a free 24/7/365 helpline for EV drivers
  • Support at least one roaming payment contract
  • Adhere to OCPI-compliance standards for data sharing and reporting

The newly introduced measures align with expectations of many EV drivers, with research demonstrating that 82 percent actively seek out hotels with reliable and user-friendly charging facilities. In addition, stats also show that the growth of EVs (electric vehicles) is already on the radar of the majority of hoteliers, with 63 percent of hoteliers viewing EV charging as a key consideration.
