New calculator helps hotels quantify refillable plastic and CO₂ savings

In this episode we speak to Nico Tréguer, co-founder of Roberts and Treguer and The Culpeper Family. Nico spoke about founding the group alongside his longtime friend Gareth, having had a vision for bringing more nature spaces to cities, the planned extension of The Buxton in Spitalfields, and how the site’s storytelling engages guests and the local community, how the Culpeper Family’s core sustainability ethos helped it secure its B-Corp status and why hospitality has a responsibility to educate and innovate when it comes to sustainability.

With increasing pressure to reduce plastic waste and meet sustainability targets, hotels now have a powerful new tool to measure their impact: the Kuishi Impact Calculator.

Launched by UK-based sustainable bathroom supplier Kuishi, this free online calculator shows hotels exactly how many single-use plastic bottles they can eliminate — and how much CO₂ they can save annually — simply by switching to refillable soap and lotion dispensers.

Turning Eco Goals into Actionable Numbers

While many hotels have begun moving away from mini toiletries, few have had the tools to accurately measure the outcome of their efforts. Kuishi’s new calculator bridges that gap.

Hoteliers enter just a few details — number of rooms, occupancy rate, bottle size, and refill frequency — and the calculator produces:

  • The number of single-use bottles saved per year
  • The reduction in carbon emissions (CO₂e)
  • A breakdown by product type (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand wash, hand lotion)
  • Results that can be emailed or shared with teams or stakeholders

“Sustainability isn’t just about intention — it’s about data,” says Mark Hopkins, Co-Founder of Kuishi. “Our goal was to help hospitality teams easily understand and communicate the real-world impact of switching to refillables.”

Advanced Options for Larger & Boutique Properties Alike

The calculator also includes advanced options for customisation, enabling teams to:

  • Select the type of plastic currently used (Standard PET, Recycled PET, Biodegradable)
  • Adjust refill rates for each product individually — ideal for spa and luxury settings
  • Compare results against Kuishi’s glass dispenser CO₂ lifecycle data

The calculator uses research-backed CO₂ emissions data and assumes a realistic lifespan for refillable dispensers to provide fair, transparent comparisons.

🧼 Designed for Hotels of All Sizes

From large hotel groups to independent boutiques, the calculator provides operational teams with:

  • A clear case for reducing single-use plastics
  • Data to support ESG reporting and internal sustainability goals
  • A practical conversation starter for procurement and housekeeping teams
  • A way to strengthen sustainability messaging to guests and stakeholders

Whether used during procurement planning, brand audits, or guest experience reviews, the tool highlights how a small operational change can have a big environmental payoff.
