RIU Hotels and Resorts has opened a second hotel in London with the launch of Hotel Riu Plaza London The Westminster, expanding its presence in the UK capital.
The 464-room hotel is located close to Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, and follows the opening of Hotel Riu Plaza London Victoria in July 2023.
RIU said strong demand for its first London property had informed the decision to add a second site in the city. The new hotel is around a 15-minute walk from the Victoria location.
Originally built in 2003, the hotel underwent a full refurbishment in 2021, when it joined Hilton’s Curio Collection. Following RIU’s acquisition, it has been added to the group’s RIU Plaza portfolio of city hotels and will not require further major renovation works.
The hotel includes a buffet breakfast offering, a lobby café bar, meeting rooms and a 24-hour gym. It is located close to the River Thames, Tate Britain, Buckingham Palace, St James’s Park and the London Eye.
RIU said the hotel’s interior design includes references to the world of espionage, reflecting its proximity to the headquarters of the UK intelligence agencies MI5 and MI6.
Hotel Riu Plaza London The Westminster becomes the 13th property in RIU’s urban portfolio, which includes hotels in cities such as Madrid, New York, Miami, Berlin, Dublin and Toronto.
The group said it continues to target expansion in major global cities and is currently building its third hotel in New York, while exploring further opportunities in Europe’s leading capitals.
