Thistle Hotels launches world’s first ‘Choose Your Own Room’ service

In this episode we speak to brothers Alex and Adrien Grosjean, young entrepreneurs who have recently acquired The Residence Inn by Marriott Manchester Piccadilly. We discussed the reasons why Manchester’s visitor market is booming, and their decision to invest in this area, why they see extended-stay accommodation as a major opportunity in what is one of the UK's fastest-growing cities, how they plan to enhance their portfolio of hotels, and their advice for the next generation of hospitality disruptors.

Hotel group Thistle have launched what it claims to be the world’s first ‘Choose Your Own Room’ (CYOR) service, saving guests the ‘fuss’ of changing rooms after checking in.

Research from Thistle, which is part of the GLH hotel management group, has shown that almost half (48%) of hotel guests in Britain have requested to change their room.

The study showed that four in 10 guests admit they feel ‘anxious’ about their hotel room before they even arrive – and one in five couples admit that poor choice has spoilt their first night away, ending up in a row. Over 88% of guests said that they would choose their own room if they could.

The new free online service is now live at the brand’s Euston hotel and will allow hotel guests to take a 360° virtual tour of the hotels’ bedrooms before choosing a room to stay in.

David Grosfils, chief operating officer from Thistle Hotels, said: “We know Brits hate to complain, so concerns about causing a fuss if we don’t like the room we’re allocated really can spoil a stay for many.  Guests often opt to stay in the same bedroom if they’ve stayed with us before, so we’re simply putting them in control by inviting guests who book direct on thistle.com to use the ‘CYOR’ service.

“Our ambition is that all Thistle hotels across the UK will have the CYOR service and we are working on rolling this out now.”
