Glasgow Airport hotel evacuated after gas leak

In this episode we speak to brothers Alex and Adrien Grosjean, young entrepreneurs who have recently acquired The Residence Inn by Marriott Manchester Piccadilly. We discussed the reasons why Manchester’s visitor market is booming, and their decision to invest in this area, why they see extended-stay accommodation as a major opportunity in what is one of the UK's fastest-growing cities, how they plan to enhance their portfolio of hotels, and their advice for the next generation of hospitality disruptors.

Some 200 people were evacuated from the Holiday Inn Express at Glasgow Airport in the early hours of this morning (9 September) after a gas leak was discovered.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) received a call from police at 3:05am after a suspected gas leak at St Andrew’s Drive, Paisley, was reported.

Guests at the hotel were moved to the nearby Holiday Inn, while the M8 was closed between junction 27 Arkleston and 29 St James for around three and a half hours.

A statement from the SFRS said: “Firefighters have been working with police officers to evacuate nearby premises, which is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the public. There are no reports of any casualties.”

Gas engineers traced the leak to a subterranean mains pipe, believed to be near the hotel’s car park, and firefighter crews are standing by to assist while they work to isolate it.

The SFRS added: “Three fire engines and a specialist vehicle are at the scene and crews will continue to work with the other emergency services for the duration of the incident, which is likely to continue for some time.”

Glasgow Airport is currently operating as normal, however people travelling to it by road have been advised to allow additional time for their journeys.
