In this episode we speak to Daniel Kyriakides, a partner at law firm Reed Smith. We discuss why private members’ clubs are experiencing a resurgence and what that means for the future of the hotel sector. From heritage buildings being reimagined as lifestyle destinations to hotels borrowing the experiential playbook of members’ clubs, we discuss how the lines between the two are becoming increasingly blurred, and why global growth is on the horizon for the private members club model.

A manor house hotel in Cheltenham has recently finished a £1.2m refurbishment, which was completed by Midlands firm Builtec Developments Limited.

The Eden Hotel Collection renovated and gave a unique look to each of the 21 bedrooms at one of its hotels, The Greenway Hotel and Spa. This 16th Century hotel is set in eight acres of countryside grounds off Shurdington Road and holds a 4 AA Red Star rating.

Room layouts have been altered through the creation of larger spaces and bathrooms in order to improve the comfort of clients. The project’s design choices have been led by the director of The Eden Hotel Collection Marian Cartter alongside interior designer Lucy Yarwood. The bedroom design has strived to find a balance between innovation and existing features.

Yarwood said: “We’re so pleased with the results and can’t wait to show our guests. What we have strived to do is create a classic style with a contemporary twist which combines the history of the building with our modern approach to the guest experience.

“We’ve really looked at every detail of the journey. It needs to work for the guest as well as for the room, so everything has been considered with them in mind, from making sure they wake up with the best view, to ensuring that their dwell time is really special.”

The new design of the rooms has also tried to blend the hotel’s rural settings with its rich history: besides enhancing original features such as stone and fireplaces, the Eden Hotel Collection has also worked with artisan and local suppliers to create bespoke furniture.

As well as 21 newly-refurbished bedrooms, the boutique hotel  also includes the Elan Spa which has been awarded 5 bubbles from the Good Spa Guide, and fine dining at the 3AA Rosette Garden Room restaurant.

Mark Chambers, group managing director of The Eden Hotel Collection, added: “As custodians of great buildings, we are really thrilled to bring this manor house back to life for our guests to enjoy.

“It’s been a tough few years for the hospitality industry but we are proud to build on our strategic programme of investment across the Group as we continue to improve the quality of the visitor experience.”
