Helping hospitality navigate new government EV charging regulations

In this episode we speak to Nico Tréguer, co-founder of Roberts and Treguer and The Culpeper Family. Nico spoke about founding the group alongside his longtime friend Gareth, having had a vision for bringing more nature spaces to cities, the planned extension of The Buxton in Spitalfields, and how the site’s storytelling engages guests and the local community, how the Culpeper Family’s core sustainability ethos helped it secure its B-Corp status and why hospitality has a responsibility to educate and innovate when it comes to sustainability.

As the UK government enforces new public electric vehicle (EV) charging regulations introduced in recent months, RAW Charging, a leading provider of charging solutions specifically for the hospitality and leisure sectors, is offering advice to hoteliers on how to stay compliant and enhance their guest offering.

The legislation, which applies to public charge points over 8kW installed after 24th November 2024 (and all existing public chargepoints above 50kW) introduces new requirements designed to improve the EV charging experience. And hoteliers now face fines of up to £10,000 for non-compliance.

What the new regulations mean for hoteliers

The new rules mandate that public EV chargers must:

  • Operate with at least 99% uptime, ensuring reliability
  • Accept contactless credit and debit card payments on chargers above 8kW
  • Provide transparent pricing displayed at the charger
  • Offer a free 24/7/365 helpline for EV drivers
  • Support at least one roaming payment contract
  • Adhere to OCPI-compliance standards for data sharing and reporting

The newly introduced measures align with expectations of many EV drivers, with research demonstrating that 82 percent actively seek out hotels with reliable and user-friendly charging facilities. In addition, stats also show that the growth of EVs (electric vehicles) is already on the radar of the majority of hoteliers, with 63 percent of hoteliers viewing EV charging as a key consideration.

Why RAW Charging is the ideal partner for hospitality businesses

As one of the UK’s most experienced destination EV charge point operators, RAW Charging already provides legislative-compliant solutions to a wide range of hospitality clients. From fast 22kW AC chargers to ultra-rapid DC charging options, RAW’s offerings deliver reliability, ease of use, sustainability, and there is no cost to the hotel – from installation to maintenance, this is all taken care of.

Jason Simpson, CEO of RAW Charging, explains: “The new regulations are a game-changer for the hospitality sector. They raise the bar for EV charging accessibility, reliability, and transparency, making it critical for hoteliers to act now.

“At RAW Charging, we are part of a small group offering hotels funded compliant charging – and have taken strides to support customers, and others across the hospitality sector and beyond in ensuring their equipment is in line with new legislation. This has included offering free consultations for hoteliers seeking advice on the new regulations and their own position, as well as undertaking site assessments to review existing infrastructure.

“We strive to combine best-in-class technology with in-depth industry expertise to ensure hotels not only comply but thrive. A seamless EV charging experience can elevate a guest’s stay and differentiate your property from competitors.”

RAW’s commitment to the hospitality sector goes beyond compliance. By aligning with industry sustainability goals and enhancing the guest experience, RAW lists existing exclusive partnerships with organisations such as AA Hotel and Hospitality Services, SLH and HOSPA. In addition, RAW notes client partnerships with major brands such as Exclusive Collection, National Trust, Merlin Entertainments, Greene King, and more, demonstrating a deep understanding of the industry and the requirements of the end customer.
