Marcliffe appoints Jordan Charles as managing director

Charles will also oversee the operational performance of recent additions to the estate, including the £5.5m glass dome brasserie, Skylark

In this episode we speak to brothers Alex and Adrien Grosjean, young entrepreneurs who have recently acquired The Residence Inn by Marriott Manchester Piccadilly. We discussed the reasons why Manchester’s visitor market is booming, and their decision to invest in this area, why they see extended-stay accommodation as a major opportunity in what is one of the UK's fastest-growing cities, how they plan to enhance their portfolio of hotels, and their advice for the next generation of hospitality disruptors.

Marcliffe, Aberdeen’s only AA five-star hotel, has appointed Jordan Charles as managing director to lead the hotel’s regional growth and the development of the recently acquired Woodbank site.

Charles joins the five-star property from Meldrum House Country Hotel and Golf Course, where he served as general manager and managing director.

During his seven-year tenure, he oversaw an increase in turnover from £3.8m in 2019 to £6.6m by April 2025, preceding the sale of that business to Apex Hotels

His career also includes management positions at Telford Hotel and Golf Resort and The Westerwood Hotel.

In his new role, Charles will manage the integration of the Woodbank site, which was acquired by the Balmoral Group in November 2025.

He will also oversee the operational performance of recent additions to the estate, including the £5.5m glass dome brasserie, Skylark.

His remit includes directing future capital investment while maintaining the property’s established service standards.

The appointment follows the acquisition of the hotel by the Balmoral Group. Charles, a 2021 Caterer Acorn Award recipient, will report to the board as the firm seeks to expand its leisure and hospitality footprint in the North East.

Sir Jim Milne, chairman of Balmoral Group and Marcliffe, said: “Jordan has a strong track record and delivered results at Meldrum House. He brings an understanding of the local market and shares our vision for the future. It was essential to appoint the right person to lead the next stage of development. Jordan has the experience and judgement needed to lead our next chapter.”

Jordan Charles, managing director of Marcliffe, added: “What attracted me to the role is the opportunity to build on what is already a strong foundation, including the opening of Skylark, and to help shape the next phase of development. My focus is on ensuring Marcliffe continues to deliver experiences, while evolving in a way that feels right for the hotel, the team and the region.”

Track record of strategic leadership at Marcliffe

The appointment of Jordan Charles as managing director of Marcliffe signifies a strategic continuation in leadership aimed at enhancing the hotel’s growth trajectory and operational excellence. Following the 2024 acquisition by the Balmoral Group, the focus has shifted to leveraging Charles’ experience from Meldrum House Country Hotel, where he facilitated a turnover increase from £3.8m in 2019 to £6.6m by April 2025.

Charles’ appointment aligns with the recent strategic direction, notably the multi-million-pound investment announced in 2024 and the unveiling of the new brasserie Skylark in 2025. His mandate encompasses not only integrating the recently acquired Woodbank site but also directing future capital expenditures while adhering to established service standards, thereby reinforcing Marcliffe’s competitive positioning in the hospitality market.
