We discuss why private members’ clubs are experiencing a resurgence and what that means for the future of the hotel sector. From heritage buildings being reimagined as lifestyle destinations to hotels borrowing the experiential playbook of members’ clubs, we discuss how the lines between the two are becoming increasingly blurred, and why global growth is on the horizon for the private members club model.

Zedwell has announced plans to open a new flagship hotel on Bank Junction in the City of London, as the tech-driven hospitality company continues to roll out its expansion goals across UK’s city centres.

The chain’s new location will find itself in the Grade-II listed building constructed in 1929 as National Westminster Bank, situated at 1 Princes Street next to luxury hotel The Ned and across The Royal Exchange, the Bank of England and Mansion House

The business said the property’s conversion will merge its historical features with the hotel brand’s tech-first operating model, defined by self check-ins, digital key access and 24/7 AI-powered assistance along with advanced soundproofing, purified air systems and ambient lighting.

The renovation will additionally transform the former bank’s ground and first floors into a publicly accessible cultural and community space for public exhibitions, events and educational programming in partnership with local charities, community groups and stakeholders.

This news comes after Zedwell’s recent expansion into Oxford, York and the capital’s Spitalfriends.

Halima Aziz, head of hotels at Zedwell, said: “1 Princes Street is one of the most prestigious buildings in the City of London, and this project reflects our vision to create hospitality destinations that are both respectful of their history and relevant for today’s guests. Importantly, it also introduces high-quality accommodation at an accessible price point for the people who work, live, study and visit the City, addressing a significant gap in the market.

“With a current and committed pipeline of more than 9,000 rooms by 2028, we are excited to continue building a scalable platform across supply-constrained gateway cities, and 1 Princes Street represents a major milestone in that journey.”

Zedwell’s ongoing expansion through flagship developments

The focus on Zedwell’s flagship hotel at 1 Princes Street signals a continuation of its expansion strategy, prominent in the hospitality sector since 2024. Zedwell’s emphasis on integrating technology with traditional hospitality practices echoes its commitment seen in the 2024 acquisition of One Princes Street, reinforcing a long-standing narrative of innovation within the company.

Previous developments, such as the plans to convert landmark heritage sites in York and the introduction of automated hotels in Oxford, demonstrate Zedwell’s trajectory towards reshaping urban hospitality. With a projected pipeline of over 9,000 rooms by 2028, Zedwell’s strategy reflects a growing need for upscale, technologically-driven accommodations in urban centres.
