Head porter Les Patterson has recently celebrated thirty years of service at Rutland Hall Hotel.
Patterson’s journey at Rutland Hall began in 1992 when he was 28 years old, joining as part of an outsourced security team.
He wanted a role that would keep him active, so in 1993 he started as a porter. His initial responsibilities included setting up conferences and weddings, providing first aid, and serving as a fire marshal.
Over the years, Patterson’s “dedication” and “leadership” led to his promotion to head porter, where he managed the day and night teams of porters, ensuring quality control and operational leadership.
According to Rutland Hall Hotel, he orchestrates “seamless” setups for conferences and function rooms, collaborating closely with the events team.
His role also encompasses diverse responsibilities, from audio and visual setup to resetting rooms from one event to the next. His dedication also extends beyond logistics, taking on the valued role of ‘duty manager’, where he safeguards the resort and its guests, taking particular interest in fire safety measures such as call point testing and fire extinguisher servicing.
Prior to his tenure at Rutland Hall, Patterson had a distinguished career in the RAF regiment, serving for nine years in airfield security.
Reflecting on his previous experiences, he said: “We were like the marines of the Royal Navy – the best part of those experiences were the opportunities of teamwork and camaraderie. It has developed a regimental working style within me and has made me fluid to change. I’ve become a very adaptable and quick-responding character, which I have taken with me throughout my time as a porter.
“It doesn’t feel like it has been 30 years; the time has passed so quickly. It’s as if the years are getting shorter! The camaraderie and spirit among my colleagues have made it a pleasure. Embracing the dynamic nature of the business keeps me engaged and enthusiastic and I’m incredibly proud to have completed three decades of dedicated service and be a part of the hotel’s recent award successes.”
He added: “The role offers a diverse range of experiences and challenges within the hotel and resort environment. Each day presents an opportunity to meet new people and contribute to memorable guest experiences.”
Joanne White, managing director of Rutland Hall Hotel, said: “Les’ dedication, warmth, and incredible 30 years of service have left an indelible mark on our establishment. His outgoing personality and sense of fun always keeps the team on its toes, whilst his commitment to excellence has enriched the guest experience and inspired our team. We are truly grateful for his unwavering loyalty and congratulate him on this remarkable milestone.”
Set within 70 acres of mature parkland in the UK’s smallest county, Rutland Hall Hotel offers breathtaking views, tranquil surroundings, and an array of facilities to suit every guest’s preference.
With its lodges recently featuring on BBC’s Interior Design Masters with Alan Carr, the hotel’s commitment to style and comfort is evident. The newly refurbished Blossoms Restaurant, which has just celebrated its first anniversary in operation, offers delightful dining experiences within a stylish and relaxing setting. Guests can indulge in dishes prepared on the open flame grill and traditional favourites such as Sunday roasts and afternoon teas while enjoying the views of Rutland Water from the outside terrace.
Guests have access to a wide range of activities, including crazy golf, pitch and putt, and a 22-metre indoor pool. The hotel’s scenic location also provides ample opportunities for walking, running, and cycling along the picturesque shores of Rutland Water.
