The renovation concludes a long-term investment project by the owners, which was designed to protect the character of the building while modernising guest facilities

In this episode we speak to Daniel Kyriakides, a partner at law firm Reed Smith. We discuss why private members’ clubs are experiencing a resurgence and what that means for the future of the hotel sector. From heritage buildings being reimagined as lifestyle destinations to hotels borrowing the experiential playbook of members’ clubs, we discuss how the lines between the two are becoming increasingly blurred, and why global growth is on the horizon for the private members club model.

Thwaites has officially completed the final phase of a £1.2m transformation at The Royal Oak in Keswick, to coincide with the start of the Lake District’s summer events.

The 18th Century coaching inn, which has reopened its bar and restaurant following a brief closure, features 18 redesigned bedrooms and updated bathrooms.

According to Thwaites, the rooms’ interior decor was inspired by the heritage and rural setting of the building, which includes open fires and a restaurant serving locally sourced food.

The renovation concludes a long-term investment project by the owners, which was designed to protect the character of the building while modernising guest facilities.

The property is situated near Derwentwater and serves as a central hub for visitors attending the Keswick Mountain Festival (15 – 17 May).

Other local events scheduled for the year include the Keswick Beer Festival and the Victorian Fayre in December. The inn is also located near the Theatre by the Lake, which hosts a year-round programme of drama and comedy.

Rick Bailey, executive chairman of Thwaites, said: “This marks the completion of a long-term investment in one of Keswick’s historic inns. As a family-run hospitality business, Thwaites is proud to own The Royal Oak and to have invested in its future. Every stage has been about protecting the character of the building while ensuring it meets the expectations of today’s guests. The result is a space that feels both timeless and refreshed.”
