Down Hall Hotel, Spa and Estate has opened a new outdoor venue called The Charles Garden to increase its capacity for weddings and corporate events.

The half-acre development in Essex was designed by landscape architects Hicks and Hart. It includes a manicured lawn that can accommodate 180 seated guests for ceremonies.

The venue also features a central aisle, jasmine arches, and a permanent bar with a drinks terrace.

Designers planted 50 trees and formal hedging to create an exclusive atmosphere across the 110-acre estate.

Management stated the project represents a strategic shift in the property’s outdoor offering. The new site is intended to provide a reliable environment for large-scale premium events.

Located 15 minutes from Stansted Airport, the hotel also offers indoor spaces including the Bridgeman Selwin Suite for 200 guests. New catering options include a wedding brunch cooked over open fires.

Packages for the new garden venue start at £195 per person. An additional brunch menu using ingredients from the hotel’s kitchen garden is available for a £40 supplement.

Kate Hart, co-founder of Hicks and Hart Garden Design, said: “Our brief from Down Hall was to create a beautiful space that can play host to outdoor weddings and events whether they be small intimate functions or larger-scale celebrations.

“We hope that the intentional combination of various outdoor ‘rooms’, coupled with high impact soft planting, will provide the perfect backdrop to create joy-filled memories.”

Down Hall Hotel enhances outdoor offerings

News Analysis

The unveiling of The Charles Garden at Down Hall Hotel is part of a larger trend seen across the hospitality industry. In June 2025, the hotel completed a £1m renovation that introduced new outdoor spaces, including this venue designed specifically for events. This shift aligns with a broader investment strategy to expand capacity and elevate guest experiences, as demonstrated in the hotel’s announcement from June 2025.

Historically, the hotel has demonstrated a consistent approach to enhancing its appeal, including a comprehensive £2.8m investment commenced in March 2022 to refurbish interiors and grounds. This included the establishment of a landscaped wedding garden, emphasising an ongoing commitment to creating attractive outdoor event spaces that cater to evolving market demands, as elucidated in the March 2022 report.

The strategic emphasis on outdoor venues appears to respond to a growing preference for experiential events, amplified by a reported 75% rise in conference enquiries from 2022 to 2024. With The Charles Garden open for bookings amid the push for wellness-focused and creative gatherings, Down Hall aims to solidify its reputation as a premier destination, as noted in January 2026. This responsiveness to attendee desires indicates a shift in venue strategies that prioritise ambience and environment over mere functionality.
