Travelodge has exchanged contracts to develop a new hotel in Bridgend, marking its 21st property in South Wales.

The 80-room site will be created through the conversion of Waterton House, a vacant office building that has been unoccupied since 2022.

Construction is expected to begin in May 2026 in partnership with Wavendon Land. The project has received planning permission for a change of use, repurposing the existing structure to avoid the carbon impact associated with new construction.

The hotel will feature the brand’s 85 Bar Cafe and on-site car parking. Developers intend to achieve a BREEAM Very Good rating by installing air source heat pumps and comfort cooling systems throughout the premises.

The site is located at the junction of the A48 and A473, approximately two miles from Bridgend town centre.

Travelodge currently operates 600 hotels across the UK and has identified a requirement for more than 300 additional locations.

Tony O’Brien, UK development director at Travelodge, said: “This is a great example of how we can sustainably grow by repurposing vacant buildings. Bridgend is a well-connected location, and this hotel will deliver high-quality, great-value accommodation for both business and leisure travellers.”

Travelodge continues its growth in South Wales

News Analysis

The contract exchange for a new Travelodge in Bridgend represents the 21st Travelodge property installed in South Wales, closely following the development of a 182-room hotel near the relatively new Cardiff arena, which began construction in September 2025 in Cardiff.

Travelodge’s ambition to convert existing office spaces into hotels is not just a nod towards sustainable development; it echoes a series of earlier conversions executed across the UK. This method has been beneficial in the past, particularly in urban centers where the demand for affordable accommodation has grown rapidly. For instance, the conversion of a vacant office building in Stratford into a hotel, with plans unveiled in April 2024, highlights this strategic direction in London.

As Travelodge develops this site, it will integrate modern sustainable features such as air source heat pumps, reflecting an industry-wide push towards eco-conscious infrastructure. The effective combination of development and refurbishment, a strategy previously discussed in their ongoing expansion plans, is increasingly vital as Travelodge seeks to fulfil the identified requirement for over 300 additional locations across the UK noted in December 2025.
